Halfway there

June 14th, 2009

We’ve crossed the halfway point in the contractor’s schedule, so in about 5 more weeks the contractor will be complete.  Then things will settle down, but we’ll still have a few things left - paint in the living room, buying shelves for the pantry and other furniture, and any other finishing touches.

Old Port

June 3rd, 2009

I wandered around the Old Port section of Montreal last night.  The weather is perfect right now, and the feeling of this section of the city is that of a European city.  There are lots of churches here; here’s a shot of Notre Dame.  I’m afraid that you’re missing one of the critical components in this photo - the scent of equine waste material from the carriages behind me in this shot.  It was feeding time, and the 4 or so tourist carriages were lined up waiting for customers.

One chicken dies….

Queue unfortunate event #3?

Perhaps it was this : http://www.wtzk.com/index.php/wpg2?g2_itemId=170

So, yeah, one of the two chickens died this past week.  Quite suddenly - it was fine in the morning, then around 10 am it was laying on the ground flopping around, and a few minutes later it was gone.  the other chicken is fine, if not a bit lonely and out of sorts.

Rogues!

May 11th, 2009

A flock of rogue chickens wandered into the fornt yard this weekend.  I’m pretty sure they belong to my neighbor across the street.

Second coming

April 23rd, 2009

A few weeks ago this sticker appeared on the street sign at the end of my block.  I found it to be particularly amusing.  I have no formal political science training but I’ve always felt that the 39th president has been under-appreciated.

2009 Model Train Show in Seattle

February 26th, 2009

In January I went to the model train show at the Seattle Center.  I was impressed that there were several groups of modellers there showing O, HO, N and (I believe) G gauge layouts.  It was informative as well as nostalgic for me.

Here are some of my favorites:

Lionel train that reminds me of my youth.

The Lionel Automated Milk Car, just as I remember. I loved the milkman who would unload the magnetic milk barrels.

N-gauge trains are lightweight and can have several cars! Reminds me of counting the train cars as we'd wait for trains to pass as a kid.

When I was a kid there were plenty of train tracks on the route to and from school.  When we’d have to stop for a train to pass we would pass the time by counting the number of cars.  The trains (Bessemer and Lake Erie line) were usually hauling iron ore to the steel towns in southwestern Pennsylvania.  As a kid they seemed to last forever.
